Please Help Trucker Desiree Save “Karma”

by Donna Smith

By now most of you know our dear friend TruckerDesiree. Although Desiree has only been driving for 16 months, her passion to help others within the industry does not go unrecognized as she makes numerous posts and “tweets” regarding trucking.  She has been an inspiration to many, including myself, to stay focused and keep our eye on the ball for the benefit of truck drivers.

Today however, I would like to talk about another passion of Desiree’s, which so many others, including myself, have. That is the love and compassion for our four legged ( or feathered) friends.

Recently Desiree adopted a small German Shepherd from her trucking terminal. The dog was abandoned and just “hanging out” there. People would feed her, but the dog was very frightened and skittish, not allowing anyone to come too close.

Desiree managed to get a body harness to finally catch her and she’s been caring for “Karma” ( she named her) as she drives across the US.  Des has invested over $500.00 so far on Karma and one of the tests that were performed by the vet came back positive for Heartworm.

As you know this is a fatal disease for dogs( as well as other animals) and without treatment, animals have no hope for recovery.  The treatment is not only expensive, but requires time “alone”  and rest for the treated animal to ensure the dead worms are not passed through the animals vital organs, but rather absorbed by the body.

We would like to ask you to help Desiree save this beautiful and loving animal from a painful and horrible  premature death.

We are offering Allens Latest Book, “The Best Truck Driving Jobs- A State by State Guide” for anyone who will help Desiree save her Dog. I’m sure you can understand that on a new truckers salary it will be extremely difficult for her to manage the cost of the treatment, as she has already invested so much to save her new friend,

Please help her by sending your donation- $1.00, $2.00, or $5.00 . . .or whatever you can afford

Just click the button below and then insert the amount on the top right of the screen that you wish to donate……….then update cart.

Help “Karma” here: Add to Cart

No Donation is too small. Upon completing the donation you will receive an instant download for Allens Book,

“The Best Truck Driving Jobs- A State by State Guide”     It will be an immediate download to your computer

If you would like to get in touch with Desiree she’s active on twitter.

Hi, just tried to donate but there was not bit trying to actually take my money!

Desiree is a big contributor to Tachoblog and has been a member of the Tachoblog Tribe from almost the beginning and I want to give something back to her!

I will be posting on this later and want to be sure that I can give a donate link that works.

  2. Tachoblog

Darcy is a close friend of mine, and she sent me this link about Karma. I own a pet health website…, and am a veterinarian. I do not practice anymore, but I might be able to offer you some help with Karma. A few things, I would be happy to give you any information about what is going on with Karma if you like, and based on where you are located I may be able to find a clinic that will do the treatment(s) at low cost. If you want more info from me you can email me at
    Good Luck,

I am so overwhelmed by the love, kindness & donations to help me & Karma.
I have been driving so much the past few days to take this emergency time off that I have been unable to reply to many emails & say Thank You Properly to everyone.
Being that Karma has been a “Career Stray” I’m a little worried about what else might be revealed about her health but I’m very fortunate I can take her to the vet on such short notice.
Many people cannot or do not treat their animals in time when they become ill for financial reasons.
When I was a child I had a dog named Alta.
We never could afford to have her spayed.
She had many litters of puppies.
One litter had a puppy that was deformed but I refused to have it destroyed.
A friend of ours kept that dog for many years.
Alta unfortunately met a very cruel end because we had no money to care for her.
I was just a kid but it had a huge impact on me & I cannot speak of it even today.
I am forever grateful to all of you & I hope Karma will grow into a symbol that gives us all hope that brighter days are ahead & someone out there does care.
We just need to keep looking out for them.

The donation link worked fine for me. I’m a huge animal lover and I’ve been following Desiree for only a week and I’m already a big fan. I listened to her on Truck Star Radio last week and it’s obvious she’s a very caring and passionate person. I hope Karma gets better. One thing for sure, Karma’s life has improved since being adopted by Desiree.

I went to visit Karma this morning and tried to response to some of the kind donations and well wishers we have had.

I added my weblink above which has a photo link where you can see my daily pictures including those of my hospital visit with Karma today.

She has to stay for 3 more days and then the recovery will be several weeks for the medicine to be absorbed in her body.

She was in good spirits as dogs always are.

    Thanks everyone!

You’re doing a wonderful thing, Desiree. I know Karma will be fine with your loving care. I wish I could send more, but I am a rescuer and am in the middle of my own emergency with a cat at the moment, trying to raise funds, too. As a rescuer, it never ends, as there are so many people out there who create this work for those of us who care. I’ve collected numerous pets dumped at truck stops, sad to say. I’m so glad you were able to save her… bless you!

  16. Lisa O'Keefe

Please let us know how much is needed. My dog and I will be using twitter to direct people to this site to donate but that would really help people get an idea of what is needed and how fast we can raise this money.

  17. Allen Smith

Thank you so much! Desiree has treated Karma and raised more that half of the needed cost from this drive. She has paid the remainder from her driving salary.
Your generous contribution will indeed help offset the additional costs!
Karma is doing well and is on her way to a full recovery because of people like you!!

    God bless you,

    Donna Smith

  18. Lisa O'Keefe

Donna, thanks. If you could put on the web site the exact amount needed, it would be helpful. On twitter, many “anipals” raise money for rescues or other animal charities and being able to see a tally and what is left is extremely helpful.

We follow Karma on twitter and are committed to helping get her the treatment! We have even forwarded this on to the accounts of dog lovers/famous people Oprah and Perez Hilton.

    Thanks for doing this.

  19. Allen Smith

I will get the exact amount from Desiree, but I believe the balance is somewhere between $250-$350. Like I said, Desiree has accepted responsibility for the balance. She has been VERY, and CONTINUES to be, very appreciative and grateful for the generous hearts which have shown such compassion towards Karma. ( and all the animals who are in need of our compassion)

    Donna Smith

As soon as she reads this I’m sure she will comment!!!

Thank you so so much….Desiree is a giving person and she is indeed reaping her “seeds of giving” from what she has sown….from others like herself.

  20. Lisa O'Keefe

Thanks. They are both wonderful. However, unless the reader takes time to read all the comments it is confusing what has happened! You are all awesome for doing this. Many apologize for the confusion.

  21. Allen Smith

No problem! We’re just thrilled that people like yourself have now come forward to “pick up the slack” for Des.
    Thank you!

  22. Lisa O'Keefe

Again, thanks and good evening. Looking at the typos from my last comment it is time I was in bed! Such grammar crimes have I committed!

  23. Desiree

Dear Lisa & RJ and everyone who have contributed to help me with Karma’s Vet treatments….

I have been so touched by your kindness. There have been numerous people who have written and reached out to help and I am so grateful.

PIn total the donations recieved from Twitter including yours have covered the expenses I had for Karma’s Heartworm treatment.

There were also direct payments made to her primary Vet for future spay and a visit from @ShawneeShep and also @HOTLabRescue who helped us in numerous ways.

Your donations have helped reimburse what I paid for all her treatments. I’m still trying to get her in for the spay but is difficult for me to have the time off.

I am hoping to attend to my medical needs and Karmas Heatworm followup when we are in Dallas in August for the “Great American Truck Show” … I am hoping I can also get her spayed at that time but trying to get enough time off is a problem right now.

Karma will be attending the convention as the Official mascot of the new iPhone Trucker Application so if you are in the Dallas area, please stop by to meet us with Donna Smith who was so kind to start this donation link for us.

I want to show my gratitude to my friends on Twitter & utilize Karmas Twitter tag further by suggesting future donations to help other rescue operations who are in desperate need of your kind donations and your “RT’s” (ReTweets)

My friends at @HotLabRescue and @ShawneeShep who runs @CCritters who have helped us in so many ways and always need assistance in placing pets in good homes.

I want to esspecially thank @Swedegis of @SavingLabs who painted a portrait and made notecards of Karma so that I could afford to buy a Banfield Pet Policy for Karma so we can have Vet Care while we are out on the road.

This experience has introduced me to so many thoughtful people and through them I’ve found other rescue organizations who are in desperate need of financial assistance to care for the growing number of abandoned or abused animals.

Please give these folks a follow on Twitter and donate what you can OR “ReTweet” into YOUR Twittersphere to help their worthwhile efforts.

The lady who I met in the parking lot over 2 years ago when I had to surrender my beloved Henry & Mary Jane in the Las Vegas Desert is now on Twitter and is working hard to help animals who are being left in great numbers as foreclosures rise.

Giver her a follow at @NVoters4Animals

Also, these wonderful folks on Twitter that have some form of Animal Rescue are always in need help for Pet Relocation efforts into no-kill facilities or states.

    @CanineHopeResQ @BuddhaGyrl @APlacetoBark @BFAS @LastChancePets @RescueAnimals @BarkRadio

    There are so many more….

Karma sometimes coughs and when we return for her next vet appointment she will be examined to see if the first treatment was fully effective.

Her personality has really perked up though and she is much more lively than when I first got her.

You can listen to me tell Karma’s Story online at on the July 2 show.

    Thanks Again,
